Arsenal legend Ian Wright has called the club ‘absolutely shameful’ over their part in the planned European Super League.
The football world was rocked on Sunday evening when 12 ‘Founding Clubs’ released a statement that announced their intentions to form a proposed breakaway European Super League.
Along with AC Milan, Internazionale and Juventus of Serie A and Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid in La Liga, the Premier League’s Big Six of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham have all joined.

Three additional clubs are expected to come on board for the first season, “which is intended to commence as soon as practicable”.
But Wright has joined the growing chorus of dissent against those teams, which includes UEFA itself, with his criticism aimed directly at Arsenal.
He branded his former club ‘absolutely shameful’ in a tweet that was accompanied by one of his own old quotes:
“Remember who you are, what you are, and who you represent. That’s what Arsenal’s about.”

Wright has actually used that phrase in criticism before – it has been claimed that fellow Gunners icon David Rocastle once said those words to him when he joined the club – when Arsenal announced plans to make 55 staff members redundant in August.
The Gunners are currently languishing in 9th in the Premier League, the lowest-ranked of any European Super League team in their respective domestic divisions.
Their 1-1 draw with Fulham on Sunday pulled them a point clear of Leeds and opened up a monumental two-point gap on Aston Villa. The former have one game in hand on Arsenal while the latter have two.
Mikel Arteta’s side are in the Europa League semi-final where they will face Villarreal, but the European superpower last won a continental trophy in 1994 by beating Parma in the Cup Winners’ Cup.
They reached the final of the same tournament a year later, also finishing as runners-up in the 2000 UEFA Cup and 2006 Champions League. Having not been past the last 16 of the latter competition since 2010 they are obviously wholly deserving of their place at the top table.
