Wright makes Liverpool claim amid Ings to Man City links

Ian Wright claims Danny Ings would “link Liverpool’s attack now” if he was still at the club amid rumours Manchester City want to buy him in the summer.

Ings spent four years at Liverpool after joining from Burnley – with the £8m fee settled by a tribunal – in 2015 but never established himself in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Injuries and the good form of other forwards meant Ings only made 25 appearances in all competitions for the Reds as he joined Southampton on loan in 2018, before joining permanently the following season.

The England international has scored 42 goals in 92 appearances for the Saints, leading to links with City ahead of the summer transfer window.

There have been some supporters wondering why City would go for the 28-year-old and Wright thinks there is too much “disrespect” out there for Ings, who he reckons would make an impact at Liverpool.

“I’ve got to mention [Danny] Ings – you see the link with [Manchester] City,” Wright said on Wrighty’s House podcast.

“The disrespect people are giving Danny Ings. Why are you doing that? He can press like Pep [Guardiola] would want him to and would stay in the areas to get chance upon chance.

“Danny Ings has got himself into the England squad from a terrible injury which meant he couldn’t do what he wanted to do at Liverpool. It wasn’t his fault. Ings could get 25 goals in that City team at a canter.

“[He has] got himself back and scoring goals at this level, making it look easy. Now he’s linked with Manchester City, who may not get their main target but need someone in who can finish chances.

“How does that not make sense to people? When you’re talking about astute management and the recruitment at that level…look at Ings, if he was backing up Bobby Firmino now, he could link Liverpool’s attack now.”

Speaking on BBC Radio Solent recently, Southampton CEO Martin Semmens said that Ings is “happy” at the club and they are still hoping he will sign a new deal, with his current contract running out in the summer of 2022.

“The conversations have gone on and we have had talks with Danny, they’ve been 100 per cent professional.

“Danny is very happy here, he wants to stay with the club and we have enjoyed having him.

“Money is 100 per cent not the issue. Danny has put us under no pressure to provide finances that we are not comfortable with. Those rumours are not true.”
