Wright labels Liverpool star as an ‘unbelievable find’

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has hailed Liverpool youngster Curtis Jones and he has suggested that he is an “unbelievable find” for the champions.

Jones joined Liverpool when he was only nine years old. He progressed through their academy before he made his full debut for them in the FA Cup in 2019.

The midfielder went onto play 12 more times during the 2019/20 term, but his game time has increased a lot this season.

OPINION: England’s brilliant youngsters deserve a far better guardian

A number of injuries to first-team players have afforded Jones and other youngsters more opportunities. The central midfielder has already played 30 times for the Reds this season. He has been one of their better players in what has otherwise been a disappointing campaign.

Speaking during the Kelly and Wrighty Show, as cited by The Liverpool Echo, Wright said that Jones has gone “under the radar” for Liverpool:

“They’re a very good team, Liverpool.

“Even someone like Curtis Jones has gone under the radar, because of the way they’ve performed, but he’s an unbelievable find.

“The way they have brought him in. He looks so comfortable in any scenario they put him in.

“Once it starts getting going and Liverpool can get on that winning run he’s only going to get better.”

Jones is included in Aidy Boothroyd’s England U21 squad for the Euros. He came off the bench as they lost their opening game 1-0 to Switzerland. After the game, Boothroyd insisted that England “are not out of it yet” despite the defeat.

The manager has also claimed that he is relishing the “challenge” of helping England through the Euros:

“When you are England Under-21s coach there is always pressure. Pressure to get players through, pressure to win. I enjoy that. Strangely enough I do. This is a challenge, I have met challenges like this before and won.

“We are doing all we can to remain positive and get results. There is no point sulking about it, what has happened has happened, whether it be a fluke (goal) or not.

“We have to put on a positive display (on Sunday) and get me smiling.”
