Wright calls for Southgate to leave out Rashford, Sterling

Ian Wright and Roy Keane have agreed that Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho should start for England ahead of Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling.

It is now just over a week until England’s Euros campaign gets underway. They face Croatia on Sunday, June 13 in their first game.

Gareth Southgate has now named his 26-man squad for the tournament. Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White, Ben Godfrey, James Ward-Prowse, Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood and Ollie Watkins all dropped out of contention.

There are hotly-contested positions throughout the team. But the toughest spots to call are the two attackers who will start alongside Harry Kane.

Ahead of England’s game against Austria, Wright called for Southgate to select Foden and Sancho:

“I would probably go with Foden and Sancho as well with Sterling and Rashford backing them up”, Wright told ITV (as cited by The Daily Mail)

“It’s not a bad thing for Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling to come off the bench with the way the season has ended for them.

“One goal in 17 for Rashford and one in 16 for Raheem. Them coming in they might build into it more rather than starting with all the pressure on them.”

Roy Keane agreed with his counterpart. But the Man United legend claimed that Southgate’s “loyalty” may see him select Sterling and Rashford.

“If you’re going on form at the moment Foden has to play, Sancho is doing well. But I think Gareth, bit of loyalty in the game will still look at Sterling or Rashford to be in the starting eleven.

“Gareth has always gone back to these lads, they have never let him down before. Difficult decision but form Foden has to be involved, has to be.”

Eniola Aluka then concluded the discussion. She claimed that Foden “has to play” around Kane. She then suggested that the other spot is between Sterling and Rashford:

“I think Foden has to play but you need some pace around Kane,’ she said. ‘It’s either got to be Sterling or Sancho for me, Sancho edges it for me because Sterling hasn’t been on form but again an embarrassment of riches for Southgate up front.”
