Rio Ferdinand claims the number of opportunities Timo Werner is being given by Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea is “crazy” when Tammy Abraham watches from the sidelines.
Werner spurned a gilt-edged chance in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Real Madrid as Thibaut Courtois saved the German’s six-yard effort with his legs.
Christian Pulisic gave the Blues the lead before Karim Benzema’s acrobatic effort secured a draw for Zinedine Zidane’s side.
OPINION: Chelsea could be the ‘despite’ European champions
But Tuchel feels Chelsea should have been out of sight after a first 30 minutes in which his side swarmed all over the Spanish giants.
And Werner had at least two further half chances to give Chelsea a lead heading into the second leg at Stamford Bridge.
And Ferdinand told BT Sport after the game that Werner is being given too many chances, with Abraham not getting the “investment” he deserves as a young player.
“It’s crazy we were talking off air before,” Ferdinand said. “A young player, does he get the time that a Timo Werner, new signing gets when they come in?
“And they’re not treated with as much care and understanding of their character and cotton wool that a new signing gets.
“A new signing gets the investment but you’re investing in a young player.
“A young player adds so much value to a team but they don’t ever get that time or patience that a new signing gets.
“Tammy wouldn’t get the time Timo gets.
“He [Werner] scored at the weekend but he missed a sitter at the weekend. He missed another tonight.
“If you’re Tammy, you’re sitting there going ‘right, OK, I’ve got to be playing at least at the weekend to get myself in the shop window for the next game against Madrid.”
Tuchel said after the game that his side “did not allow” Madrid any chances and they should have scored at least once more.
“We started the game very very well, with a lot of courage and quality,” Tuchel said. “We deserved to win the first half, we had chances. Unfortunately they scored from a set-piece and they had nothing else, we didn’t allow any chances.
“It was a disappointing score at half time. We had to stay calm and not lose confidence. The second half was very tactical, you could feel that we are a bit tired. We only had a few days to recover from another tough away game. We have to live with 1-1.
“The goal was well deserved and we should have scored at least one more. We conceded more or less out of nothing and that can always happen against individual quality.”
