Ward-Prowse to be ‘omitted’ from England’s final Euros squad

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse will be left out of England’s 26-man squad for the European Championships, according to reports.

The midfielder was included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad last week.

Mason Mount, Declan Rice, Jordan Henderson, Jude Bellingham and Kalvin Phillips were the other central midfielders who were called up.

Ben White, Ben Godfrey, Sam Johnstone and Aaron Ramsdale were the uncapped players that were included.

Southgate will announce his final 26-man squad for this summer’s tournament on Tuesday. This is before they have pre-competition friendlies against Austria and Romania. They will face Austria and Romania at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium on Wednesday and Sunday respectively.

England‘s Euro 2020 campaign gets up and running on Sunday, June 13 against Croatia at Wembley.

The Athletic have reported that Ward-Prowse will be one of seven players removed from the squad on Tuesday.

On the decision, they add: “Southgate has decided to go with midfielders from clubs who finished higher in the Premier League table.

“That is thought to include Henderson, despite the Liverpool captain having played no competitive football since February.”

Meanwhile, Southgate claimed last week that England’s Euros build-up is more “complicated” than their rivals:

“I think our situation is more complicated than any other country at the moment.

“We have known for a little while that, of this 33, we’ve got 12 players still to play in the European finals this week so we were always going to need some additional players for the first part of our camp.

“Add to that, we’ve got some injuries that are at various stages – a couple that we have very little information about at the moment and a couple that are back into training or back into matches in Jordan and Jack Grealish but still not in training consistently, not training with the team in Jordan’s case.

“So we felt that more time is going to help us make better decisions. I’ve always said my preference was to name the squad as a clean 26. We were able to do that ahead of Russia (for the 2018 World Cup).

“We had standby players that knew their role and that is always a preferable situation but we have not got an ideal hand of cards this time.”
