The round of 16 gets underway on Saturday as Wales and Denmark will lock horns for the first match. The Dragons come into this match having lost 1-0 to Italy, but a draw with Switzerland and a well-earned win over Turkey was enough to ensure that Rob Paige’s men qualified for this juncture as runners up in Group A. Their loss to Italy is only their second defeat in their last 16 competitive matches, and they haven’t lost back to back ties since June 2019.

That being said, this game will be staged in Amsterdam – a venue that hasn’t brought Wales much luck. In fact, they’ve lost both of their last two games, played against the Netherlands in 1988 and 2014, and will be taking on a Danish side they haven’t beaten in any of their last three meetings dating back to June 1999. They also lost both home and away to Denmark during the 2018 UEFA Nations League competition.

Meanwhile, Denmark have had to endure quite a traumatic tournament so far, with key playmaker Christian Eriksen suddenly collapsing on the pitch and having to be subsequently hospitalized. Yet, despite that, the Danish Dynamite, against all odds, have booked a spot in the round of 16. Although they were beaten in their first two games against Finland and Belgium, they roared to life to battle to a well-deserved 4-1 victory over Russia to secure a spot in the first knockout rounds.

In doing so, Kasper Hjulmand’s men have made history. No team have ever been able to get to this point after losing their first two group stage games, and Denmark will be hoping the emotions following their latest win will be able to see them through to the quarter-finals.

Wales, though, having made it to the semis at Euro 2016, will again be hoping for a deep run at this summer’s competition. As this is the knockout rounds, only one team will be able to progress. Will it be the history-making Danes or the ambitious Welsh who will be awaiting their next opponent in the quarter-finals?
