Sinclair: Sterling will have clubs ‘queuing up’ to sign him

Pundit Trevor Sinclair believes Raheem Sterling will have a queue of clubs hoping to sign him, should he leave Manchester City this summer.

The England international is being linked with a move away from the Etihad following their Champions League final defeat.

He’s also had to spend some time on the bench this season, due to the form of team-mates Ferran Torres and Riyad Mahrez.

Alan Smith: Loved in Manchester; forgiven in Leeds?

Recent reports suggest Arsenal are interested in landing both him and Mahrez from City. However, it’s not clear whether they would have the funds to get such a deal over the line.

Speaking about Sterling, former City winger Sinclair said: “I might be wrong, but reading between the lines and the media that’s being released, I think they’d be prepared to let him go.

“I think there’s a potential move for Raheem this summer. There are a few rumours coming out that Man City are prepared to listen to offers.

“You look at the way he’s played during his time at Man City and he has been superb.

“I think there will be a queue of clubs wanting to sign him, not on the last three or four months of form but on his previous nine years of performances.

“He’s not had any real injury problems. I look at him and he doesn’t look excited; he looks anxious about being out there.

“He’s proved to all the fans he’s a top player, so I think he needs a fresh challenge and I think it would coincide with the club’s model.”

Due to his own high standards, Sterling’s 2020/21 return of ten goals in league 31 games is viewed as sub-par.

But when you add in eight assists in the league, as well four more goals in cup competitions, it’s clear to see why clubs might want sign him.

The winger joined City from Liverpool in 2015 with the aim of winning trophies. He’s done just that, picking up three Premier League titles, one FA Cup and five League Cups.

However, a Champions League winners medal remains illusive following their 1-0 defeat in Porto against Chelsea.

Kai Havertz scored the only goal on Saturday as Thomas Tuchel picked up his first trophy as Blues boss.
