Timo Werner could be on his way out of Chelsea this summer, if some accounts are to be believed.
Although the German international only just arrived at Stamford Bridge in a £47.5 million deal from RB Leipzig last season, he has hardly set the pitch alight. In stark contrast to the 2019/2020 season, when he scored 28 goals in 34 Bundesliga appearances, ranking only behind Bayern ace Robert Lewandowski in terms of goal output, the 25-year-old was only able to manage just six goals in 35 Premier League matches for the Blues. Werner scored only 12 goals in all competitions – his lowest since his teenage days with Stuttgart – and also struggled for form and confidence with the German national team.
While coach Thomas Tuchel continued to back him, even playing the ex-Leipzig man at the expense of English youngster Tammy Abraham, Werner failed to replicate the heights he reached in Germany. As such, reports from his native country, namely Sky Germany, have claimed that Chelsea could ship him out in a bid to try to bring Dortmund’s man of the moment, Erling Haaland to London.
Werner isn’t the only player who the same report claim could be used as a makeweight. Abraham was also mentioned, but apparently Dortmund aren’t interested in him whatsoever, while Callum Hudson-Odoi reportedly has no interest in being used as a pawn to bring Haaland to England and there are some at Chelsea who feel that despite also having a rough debut season, Hakim Ziyech should be given a bit more time to settle in.
