Transfer report: Huge boost for Barcelona as PSG make final decision on their Messi pursuit

Barcelona are still frantically trying to tie down Lionel Messi to a new Camp Nou contract after seeing his previous deal expire, and while he has not yet been officially re-signed, the Blaugrana appear to have received a huge boost.

The Argentine icon is said to have all but agreed to a new deal. However, given that he is a free agent, the worry has always been whether the 34-year-old could be tempted into a change of heart by another top European side, a.k.a. Paris Saint-Germain.

However, according to Le Parisien (as per Marca), the Ligue 1 powerhouse have called it quits with their pursuit of Leo. The French giants have not shied away from discussing their desire to bring the six-time Ballon d’Or winner to the Parc des Princes in an attempt to reunite him with former Barcelona team-mate and fellow countryman Angel Di Maria. Unfortunately, it looks like La Pulga has lost interest in move to the French capital.

This report, while merely a speculation, will come as great news to Cules. However, this does not mean the Catalan giants are out of the woods yet as Juan Laporta still needs to get several players off the books in order to register Messi as the Spanish giants have hit La Liga’s wage limit.

Regardless, after handing in a transfer request last summer, Camp Nou supporters will be glad to hear that contract talks are progressing well with their all-time top scorer. All fingers point to a two-year extension, with the Argentine set to be free to join the MLS after that spell only to later join Barcelona as a club ambassador.

Leo is not expected to report for duty any time soon as he is currently on break after his successful but exhausting Copa America campaign. The Albiceleste sensation captained his nation to the title, their first trophy since 1993, bringing an end to his long wait for silverware with his national team.
