Gossip: Mourinho sacked over exodus ‘fears’ as suitor emerges

Daniel Levy stuck with Jose Mourinho for as long as he could, but the risk of disillusioned Spurs players leaving en masse forced his hand.

TEN A PENNY
Much like seemingly every other team, Tottenham were apparently bullied into joining ‘the group developing proposals for a European Super League’. They had no choice but to help threaten the very foundations upon which the game and hundreds of teams are built. Their mates were all smoking behind the bike sheds first so what choice did they have?

Daniel Levy sort of apologised for “the anxiety and upset caused” by the collapsed plans and their part in them on Tuesday evening. Kind of. Vaguely. He never actually said sorry. But still.

The Tottenham chairman is clearly struggling with his emotions, though. He sacked Jose Mourinho after ‘fearing’ that he might be left without an entire squad to work with, and is ‘devastated’ that the appointment never worked out.

Dean Jones of Eurosport says the future of ‘as many as 10 first-team players’ were uncertain for as long as Mourinho remained in charge. The danger that they ‘could demand transfers over the summer, after becoming so disillusioned’ under Mourinho forced Levy’s hand.

Only four players are actually named: Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Gareth Bale and Harry Winks. One of these things is not like the others.

In the case of Kane, retaining him ‘is an absolute must’ and that will be the first remit for Mourinho’s replacement. Tottenham are ‘adamant’ he won’t be sold. Then there is Alli, who has ‘a clean slate’ under new management, with PSG unlikely to revisit their interest. In terms of Bale, that was driven by Levy rather than Mourinho and the latter’s demise means the club may trigger their ‘first option’ to buy him this summer.

Oh, and Winks. He ‘will be buoyed’ by the developments after contemplating having to move. Ryan Mason will love him.

GOING OUT ON A LIM
As for Mourinho, where next? Todofichajes throw a new name into the hat: Valencia.

Club owner Peter Lim believes the Portuguese is ‘an incredible opportunity’ for a club that size. They say talks between he and Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes, have already taken place, with a meeting likely to follow.

The supposed plan does rely on the European Super League being a thing, with Lim apparently seeing that as an opportunity to win the Champions League while those dozen clubs were off on their merry circle jerk. Things might have changed now that has disintegrated.

But Mourinho’s ‘excellent relationship’ with Lim means ‘it is not an impossible operation at all,’ especially as Javi Gracia’s managerial position at the Mestalla has never been too secure.

YOU AIN’T GOT NO ALABA
It seems that David Alaba’s future might finally have been decided. Max Bielefeld of Sky Germany claims the defender has agreed a five-year contract with Real Madrid that will commence once his Bayern Munich deal expires in the summer.

He adds that nothing is signed but that all parties expect the dotting I’s and crossing of T’s in due course. Considering there is only one of either in the 28-year-old’s name that really shouldn’t take so long.

Liverpool didn’t offer enough, clearly.
