LIVERPOOL LIKED LYON DEFENDER
Liverpool left it late but, perhaps prompted by the news that Joel Matip is out for the season, they eventually got some centre-backs through the door. The Reds signed Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak, two defenders you might not have heard prior to their starring roles in the deadline day drama. But the champions were also in for others…
We know they wanted Braga’s David Darmo and Duje Caleta Car. The Marseille defender was perhaps their primary target and the Croatia international was ready to board a plane to Manchester when OM decided they couldn’t spare him.
According to The Sun, Lyon reached a similar conclusion over Marcelo. Apparently, Jurgen Klopp identified the 33-year-old as a short-term solution to their injury woes. But after Jason Denayer was injured at the weekend, Lyon could not spare Marcelo, who wasn’t enthused about Liverpool’s offer of a short-term deal anyway.
SAINTS FAILED IN REQUEST FOR REDS YOUNGSTER
Here are the moves that did happen yesterday. Here are a few more that didn’t…
Liverpool rejected a late request from Southampton to borrow Neco Williams for the rest of the season. Saints had better luck with Takumi Minamino.
Manchester United considered a late move for Dayot Upamecano, but opted to wait until the summer when the RB leipzig defender’s £38million release clause becomes active.
United rejected interest from Newcastle, Southampton and West Ham to take Brandon Williams on loan.

PREM TRIO IN FOR INTER STAR
With the January window in the rear-view mirror, let’s speculate about the summer…
Inter Milan are already concerned over the prospect of keeping hold of Achraf Hakimi for next season. The 22-year-old joined Inter last summer for £35million but the Italians were unable to make their first payment, which Real Madrid agreed to defer until March.
Inter would prefer to keep Hakimi but they know if they receive an offer to reclaim their investment, they will have a hard time turning it down.
Arsenal and Chelsea are already known to be tracking the left-back, with the Gunners holding fire yesterday despite their lack of depth on that side. But Calciomercato says Manchester City have joined the race, because Pep Guardiola just loves a full-back.
