Tottenham identify Sabitzer alternative to bolster midfield

Tottenham will reportedly pursue Torino’s Sasa Lukic if they fail to sign RB Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer.

Manager Jose Mourinho is keen to improve his midfield this summer after seeing the impact of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

They’ve been heavily linked with Sabitzer but could now move for the Serie A star instead.

According to the Express, Tottenham aren’t convinced that they can win the race for Sabitzer.

The Leipzig skipper is wanted by a host of top European clubs, including Arsenal and AC Milan.

The German side are also unwilling to sell one of their star players in the upcoming summer transfer window.

That means it would take a major fee to bring Sabitzer to North London.

One prime alternative is Torino’s Lukic, who has been in great form this season.

The report cites Italian source TMW, who state that Spurs have a strong interest in signing Lukic.

The 24-year-old has made 21 Serie A appearances this term, scoring three goals.

He’s able to play as a central midfielder or as a second striker and has impressed Tottenham scouts.

It’s thought that he would form a good partnership with Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele in their team.

Lukic scored in three successive games earlier this season, announcing himself to Europe’s top clubs in the process.

He’s made over 100 appearances for Torino since joining from Partizan Belgrade in July 2016.

Given Lukic’s current club, he would cost considerably less than Sabitzer.

Sabitzer recently responded to the transfer rumours, saying: “Salary is not my main focus right now. I’m doing well enough, I don’t have to worry about it every day.

“I don’t play football to build a money bin after my career. I play for success. I’ve always been a winner, and I want to win trophies.”

Mourinho now has two prime options to choose from in his search for a midfielder.

Their ability to sign Sabitzer will depend on their willingness to spend big, with Lukic waiting in the wings.
