Tuchel explains best Havertz position after draw with Leeds

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has revealed that the best position for Kai Havertz is as a number nine rather than number 10.

The German forward started in Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Leeds at Elland Road.

He failed to score but did show some promise in attack and could get a much-needed goal soon.

Havertz hasn’t bagged a goal for Chelsea in the Premier League since October.

Speaking about the player’s best position, Tuchel told BT Sport (via BBC Sport): “He is pretty much a number nine because he likes to be high and not necessarily drop to 10 and turn. He loves to be high and arrive in the box.

“He loves to be there and have the last touch. This is for me why he played number nine today.”

Both teams hit the crossbar in the draw. Tyler Roberts chipped Edouard Mendy well and was unlucky not to score the opener, with his shot hitting the bar.

Luke Ayling’s clearance then rebounded off Diego Llorente and hit the Whites’ woodwork.

When asked about the overall performance, Tuchel continued: “It is super hard to play on the pitch. Very slippery and bouncy. We had a couple of chances to go ahead but they trouble you and pressure you.

“You ned to make a goal for belief. Sometimes it is like this. I don’t want to be too harsh.

“As long as we have chances and touches in the box and don’t concede too many chances the results will be there. We need to accept this.”

Chelsea kept another clean sheet thanks to a great save from Edouard Mendy. He denied Raphinha with a strong hand in the second half.

Speaking about the clean sheet, Tuchel said: “It gives us confidence not to concede. We are disappointed in the dressing room [with the result] and this is a good sign.”

The result puts Chelsea on 51 points after 29 matches. Their superior goal difference means it’s unlikely they will be leapfrogged by West Ham this weekend.

Tuchel will now turn his attention to the Champions League. The Blues host Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

They have a 1-0 aggregate lead after Olivier Giroud’s great winner in the first leg.
