Terry backs Mount to captain Chelsea and England

John Terry says Mason Mount has been Chelsea’s best player this season and believes the midfielder will one day be captain of both club and country.

Mount captained Chelsea in Frank Lampard’s last game at the helm before Thomas Tuchel took charge.

He was left out of the German’s first starting XI but returned has to the lineup for the three-game winning streak.

And legendary ex-Chelsea captain Terry has been blown away by the 22-year-old this term.

“Mason Mount is 100 per cent a future Chelsea captain,” he told his followers during an Instagram Live. “He’s been the best player at Chelsea this season, to be honest.

“He’s a great lad, trains unbelievably well, is Chelsea through and through, definitely showing leadership qualities.

“In my mind, [future] Chelsea and England captain for me.”

Terry says England are blessed with attacking talent and named Phil Foden and Jack Grealish as the two finest youngsters in world football.

“When you talk about Phil Foden and Jack, they’re the two best young players in the world at the minute and we’re lucky they’re both English,’ Terry added.

“He [Foden] is 20 years old and producing great skill and quality in a top side.”

The Villa assistant hailed Grealish’s talent but also his desire to improve.

“What a talent. What a player,” Terry said. “We’re lucky to have him at Villa but for me he’s one of the best in the Premier League without a shadow of a doubt and can still improve as he’s only young.

“The side people don’t see is he’s the last one to leave the training ground.

“He’s there every night, he wants to improve his strength, agility, speed, always looking at clips of himself after the game.

“He’s desperate to make the England team and has been instrumental in Villa’s success.”
