Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor heaped praise on his players after they worked “tremendously hard” to extend their winning run to 12 games against Tottenham.
The victory moved them to within two points of Barclays Women’s Super League leaders Chelsea.
Taylor said: “I wouldn’t say it was comfortable, I thought the girls had to work tremendously hard. Tottenham tweaked a few things, and it wasn’t easy. It was a really well earned three points.”
OPINION: Early Winners – Any and every witness to that De Bruyne pass
Taylor felt getting the early goal allowed them to “calm our nerves and allow us to play the game a bit more.”
A Rebecca Spencer own goal and further strikes from Janine Beckie and Caroline Weir had the game won with half an hour to go as Tottenham finished the second half much stronger than the first and did not lie down.
Taylor paid tribute to Beckie, and said: “Janine is a very, very good player and I admire her.
“My job is to give her the platform to be able to give her the potential. She knows she needs to show her consistency. I’ve always said Janine is a big part and a big reason that we’ve done well as a front line.”
Beckie added: “It’s always good to score and always good to help the team to get the win. The Barca goal didn’t feel as good due to the situation, but like Gareth’s touched on, you have to score to get in the team, so hopefully this is a performance to build on.”
Tottenham have now gone eight games without a win in the WSL and head coach Rehanne Skinner said: “We’re starting games at the moment too negatively out of possession and are not sticking to the press and we’ve got to get over that.
“At the end of the day, we’ve got to get points and it can’t take us till the second half to do that.
“There were some frustrations at half time, and we were much more effective in the second half. Ultimately, we’ve got to start games like that.”
Tottenham face a tough close to the season, with games against Manchester United, Chelsea and Birmingham and Skinner added: “I think we’ve just got to focus game by game, it’s difficult to kind of go any further than that.
“We’ve got to focus on us and what we need to do right, I think performances will convert to points and that’s something we need to keep focusing on.”
