Gerrard backs Klopp, reveals ‘dream’ of managing Liverpool

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has backed manager Jurgen Klopp and revealed his ‘dream’ of managing at Anfield one day.

The Englishman recently helped Rangers to win their first Scottish league title in ten years.

His success north of the border has sparked rumours of a potential Liverpool return.

Klopp is under pressure at Anfield after Liverpool suffered a sixth consecutive home defeat in the Premier League.

But Gerrard insists the German boss is the right man for the job.

He told ITV: “The fans don’t want me to be the manager of Liverpool. They want Jurgen Klopp to continue to be the Liverpool manager – and I’m totally with all of them.

“We shouldn’t talk about this, we have one of the best managers leading our club at the minute, I love him.

“I hope he stays for a few more years. But I’ve got a job here. I don’t think it’s helpful to talk about this and I hope Jurgen stays at Liverpool for many years.”

Gerrard became a Liverpool legend during his 19-year stay with the club.

He made 710 appearances, scoring 186 goals. He also steered them to Champions League glory during the 2004/05 campaign.

Gerrard says it’s his ‘dream’ to one day manage the side.

He continued: “Liverpool is my club. I had a great journey. Is it a dream for me to one day be the Liverpool manager? Yes, it is, but not yet and who’s to say I’ll ever be good enough.

“There’s a lot of fantastic managers that would all like the chance to manage Liverpool. We need to respect Jurgen first and foremost.”

Gerrard will likely remain with Rangers for a few years before attempting a famous Anfield return.

His main job next season will be to retain the Scottish league title by beating rivals Celtic.

For Liverpool, meanwhile, it’s proving to be a troublesome season.

The Reds are 22 points behind leaders Man City and falling behind in the race for a top four place.

One way they can salvage their season is through success in Europe.

Klopp’s men face RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday at 20:00.
