Spurs told to sign ‘world-class’ keeper to replace Lloris

Spurs have been urged to replace Hugo Lloris with a ‘world-class’ keeper by pundit Danny Mills.

Lloris has received criticism in recent weeks as Spurs have lost four out of their last five league games.

The club captain conceded three in the away defeat to Man City last week.

Former England international Mills thinks Spurs chairman Daniel Levy needs to invest in a replacement.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I know he’s won the World Cup and has been a very, very good goalkeeper but I never thought he was world class.

“If you want to start winning the Champions League or getting in the top four you need a world-class goalkeeper.

“There are very few teams that have won the Premier League or Champions League without a very good goalkeeper and I’m talking exceptional.

“His mistakes aren’t howlers, they’re not glaring errors but you look at it and go ‘I think he could have done better in that scenario’.

“That’s what it is. When you haven’t got an incredible defence in front of you it just puts everybody on edge.

“The goalkeeper is thinking ‘I can’t trust the defenders’ and the defenders are thinking ‘I cannot trust the goalkeeper’. All of a sudden it causes a little bit of indecisiveness.”

Spurs were poor in their 3-0 loss to City on February 13. Ilkay Gundogan scored twice as Pep Guardiola’s men continued their impressive run.

After the defeat, former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara criticised multiple players, including Lloris.

He said: “I actually feel a little bit sorry for Jose Mourinho, because the players are performing so poorly.

“When I look at Lloris, Davinson Sanchez, Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura, they just look so average and so bad, they’re making mistakes.”

Mourinho has backed Lloris to rediscover his form in upcoming matches.

But if the France international fails to do so, his place could be under threat from backup Joe Hart.
