Spurs star’s future in jeapardy amid Mourinho doubts

Tottenham full-back Matt Doherty’s future at the club is reportedly in jeapardy with Jose Mourinho doubting his ability.

Despite only joining Spurs for £15million this summer, Mourinho is already considering allowing the former Wolves man to leave, sources told ESPN.

Doherty has made just nine Premier League starts this season and just two in 2021, with one of those – against Leeds – ending in a sending off in the 90th minute.

Mourinho could be heard berating Doherty (a la Luke Shaw) from the touchline throughout the game and the report claims there is further frustration behind the scenes.

Doherty insisted he “loves it” at Spurs before Christmas despite consistently being second choice to Serge Aurier.

ESPN claim Aurier’s improvement is another negative mark against Doherty, but even in the absence of the Frenchman due to a foot injury on Sunday, Mourinho opted to start Japhet Tanganga, introducing Doherty as a half-time substitute.

Mourinho’s own future at the club is also unclear, with reports from The Athletic claiming the Spurs players are unhappy with the style of football they are forced to play.

Perhaps Doherty just needs to outlast his boss?
