Spurs are in the frame to make an offer for former Liverpool goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi this summer, according to reports in Germany.
Hugo Lloris has come under criticism this season, not least for his “embarrassing” performance in Spurs’ thrilling nine-goal FA Cup fifth round defeat to Everton.
That led to reports that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy could seek out a summer replacement for the Frenchman, with his deal up in the summer of 2022.
OPINION: Roma an ideal host for the Mourinho Show – not a compliment
That has seen Spurs linked with the likes of Lille’s Mike Maignan, Wolfsburg’s Koen Casteels and West Brom’s Sam Johnstone and now another name has emerged.
German newspaper Bild (via Sport Witness) claims that Tottenham are one team interested in RB Leipzig goalkeeper Gulacsi, who has been impressing this season for the Bundesliga outfit.
Leipzig have only conceded 25 goals in the Bundesliga this season, which is the best in the division, with Gulacsi taking his place in between the posts for every one of those matches.
The Hungary international spent five years at Liverpool, going out on loan to Hereford United, Tranmere Rovers and Hull City, before eventually leaving for RB Salzburg in 2013.
Leipzig picked him up from their sister club two years later for just €3m with Gulacsi making 221 appearances for the German side.
And Bild claim Spurs could pick him up for a ‘ridiculous price’ with a €13m release clause apparently written into his contract at Leipzig.
The report describes the 30-year-old as a ‘family man’ which suggests he could think long and hard before agreeing to a move unless it’s right for his wife and two children.
Roma and Borussia Dortmund are named as the two other clubs, as well as Spurs, who are ‘ready to invest a lot of money’ in a new goalkeeper.
Before Markus Krosche resigned as Leipzig sporting director in April, he said: “Peter knows what he has in us. And we know what we have in him. I see no reason that he wants to change.”
Meanwhile, Tottenham defender Eric Dier feels he has been harshly judged for his performances this season.
The 27-year-old said yesterday: “I’m really happy to have played the last three. I’ve felt good in those games. I want to be playing, I want to be performing to a level I know I can.
“I believe I can still perform to a much higher level. I’m happy to be playing, obviously, and I’ve just got to keep working hard and improving.
“I’ve got mixed emotions towards it really. At times, I feel like it’s a bit unfair and a bit… I’m trying to think of the right words… but sometimes I’ve made a mistake or something has led to a goal and one mistake is talked about like it’s four or five. I’ve felt that at times.
“As defenders, you’re always going to make mistakes at times and the most important thing is how you react to them.
“I think fans have seen what I can do in glimpses, especially at the beginning of the season. I think I had a very good first six months and it dropped a little bit for a few games. But I feel like I’ve been back to a good place for a couple of months now.
“Just the narrative I see that is painted of me, at times. It doesn’t really bother me too much. I just think it’s a bit unfair at times. It’s football.
“I just need to worry about myself and keep trying to do better. But I’m my own biggest critic and I know where I can improve and when I can improve.”
