Graeme Souness has insisted that regardless of whether Liverpool gets into the top four, “several” players need to take a look at themselves this summer.
The 2020/21 season has been a really tough one for the Premier League champions. They have been hampered by injuries as they have fallen away from title contention.
They even looked unlikely to make it into the top-four, but that has changed in recent weeks. Their 4-2 win over Manchester United on Thursday moved them to within four points of Chelsea.

The Reds face West Brom on Sunday and a win would move them one point behind Thomas Tuchel‘s side with two games to go.
As cited by The Daily Star, Souness told Sky Sports that most of Liverpool‘s players will admit that they have had a bad season:
“I thought Liverpool the other night (against Manchester United), there was glimpses of them being back to their best.
“The intensity was back in their game and I thought they were fabulous.
“Old Trafford was never a happy hunting ground for Liverpool, even in the day’s they were dominant. I’m fancying them now (to make top four) with a bit of consistency.
“People are playing with their tails up. People are playing the way we expect them to play.
“There’s several people at the club who have to look at themselves at the end of the season and say, ‘did I have a good season?’
“I think a few could say yes but the majority would have to hold their hands up and say no.
“Win the next three games. Park this season,” Souness said. “Champions League next season and get back on the horse.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool midfielder Fabinho has suggested that a top-four finish would make their season a success:
“If you asked me at the beginning of the season, I would say no.
“At the beginning we are always optimistic, I would talk about winning trophies.
“Right now, I would say yes because the season has been a little bit strange. After the injuries, the bad moments we’ve had, being in the top four would mean a success.
“Now is the decisive part of the season. We have three finals to play, to win.
“We have to try and play our best football but in finals you have to win. If we don’t play our best but can get the three points, I will take it because that is what we need in this moment.”
