Souness criticises Leicester ‘nibbler’ in Chelsea defeat

Grame Souness had a go at Leicester defender Wesley Fofana for his unnecessary “nibble” in Leicester’s costly defeat to Chelsea on Tuesday.

The Foxes were deservedly beaten 2-1 at Stamford Bridge – a significant blow to their Champions League qualification hopes.

Just a few days earlier, Leicester came out on top in the FA Cup final over the Blues, but Antonio Rudiger and his teammates were desperate for revenge.

Chelsea climbed above Leicester into third as a result, while Liverpool can also overtake Brendan Rodgers’ side on goal difference if they beat Burnley on Wednesday.

Rudiger bundled home the opener from a corner before Jorginho added the second from the penalty spot after Fofana was adjudged to have fouled Timo Werner in the box.

With Werner moving away from goal Souness believes it was an unnecessary challenge from the Leicester centre-back.

“This is clumsy by Fofana,” the former Liverpool man told Sky Sports.

“He’s gone away from goal, no danger, and he’s had a nibble.

“There was no need to have a nibble. Is it enough to bring him down? Who cares.

“In the modern game, I’m going down and going to get a penalty.

“He’s had a nibble so unnecessarily. He’s done his job, he’s going away from goal, there’s no danger to my goal, but I’ll still have a nibble.

“Totally wrong. He’s a young man, learning the game, and he should learn that’s a big lesson.”

Kelechi Iheanacho pulled a goal back from Leicester, before Ayoze Perez blazed over a great chance to snatch an equaliser late on – a chance fellow pundit Jimmy Floyd Hassebaink was convinced he should have gobbled up.

“This is a very good chance,” he said.

“If you look at the middle of the park, (Mateo) Kovacic, he is sleeping, he’s not looking where his man is, he’s not tracking back, and Perez gets a beautiful chance.

“He should just put his foot through it, hit the side net, and then Chelsea can’t really complain – it’s 2-2.

“For Leicester, that’s the best scenario ever.

“We all know in football, that you’re always going to get that chance. That was that chance for 2-2.”
