Solskjaer has no sympathy for Moyes over his Man Utd failings

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained that he does not “feel sorry” for David Moyes about his unsuccessful spell as manager of Manchester United.

After a successful period as manager of Preston North End, Moyes took over at Everton in March 2002.

The Scotsman steered the Toffees away from relegation trouble when he first took over and they mounted a serious challenge for a Champions League place in his first full season in charge.

Everton eventually finished seventh but Moyes won that season’s LMA Manager of the Year award.

The Toffees just about avoided relegation in 2003/04 but they returned to form the season after. They finished fourth at the end of the 2004/05 campaign despite them losing Wayne Rooney that summer.

Everton ended up in the top eight of the Premier League in all but two of his full seasons in charge. The great job that he was doing was recognised as he was chosen to take over at Manchester United from Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

But Moyes’ move to the Red Devils did not go to plan. Despite signing a six-year contract, he did not last a full season as he left in April 2014.

When he departed, United were seventh in the Premier League and they were 13 points adrift of the top four.

Since leaving Man United, Moyes has been in charge of Real Sociedad, Sunderland and he is currently into his second spell at West Ham.

The Hammers are enjoying a phenomenal season as they are in the hunt for a Champions League place. They face Man United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

During his latest press conference, Solskjaer told reporters that Moyes has made “massive improvements” with West Ham:

“I don’t think you can feel sorry for someone who managed Manchester United.

“It’s a dream job for many, many managers and David wouldn’t have taken it if he didn’t want it but, unfortunately, he didn’t last as long as he would have wanted.

“But in football, you shouldn’t be surprised at anything and he is proving again what he’s capable of at West Ham.

“I’ve got to say that David has made massive improvements with the team — this season and last season as well.

“They have got Michail Antonio really flying, Tomas Soucek is scoring goals and he has really built on that.”
