Dyche: Burnley lacked ‘clinical finishing’ in Leeds defeat

Sean Dyche says a lack of ‘clinical finishing’ is to blame for Burnley’s 4-0 home defeat against Leeds.

The Clarets started brightly at Turf Moor but couldn’t get a goal to reward their positivity.

Leeds ultimately opened the scoring in the 44th minute. Burnley backed off as Mateusz Klich raced forwards, allowing the midfielder to curl a nice finish into the bottom corner.

After the break, Burnley had a great chance to get level. Matej Vydra did well to steal the ball and go one-on-one with Illan Meslier.

But the young keeper was equal to his shot and sent it out for a corner.

From then onwards Leeds demonstrated their class. Jack Harrison flicked home an Ezgjan Alioski shot to make it two before Rodrigo scored a brilliant quick-fire brace.

In contrast, James Tarkowski and Johann Berg Gudmundsson failed to convert for the home side in the second half.

Speaking after the defeat, Dyche told BT Sport (via BBC Sport): “Harsh in the way they were clinical, it panned out as we expected.

“We started well and stopped that occurring, allowed a goal to their liking. They get two in front and we had golden chances and you can’t miss them. Leeds do concede as well as score and we shouldn’t have missed those.

“Those chances could have changed the feel of the game, their keeper makes two good stops.

“It’s hard to ask a lot more of my players, we had an emotional game on Monday and big result, I was expecting us to slide off it more than what we did really, but physically we were still at it.

“They were clinical, having a good run of form and great season. We look like we’re huffing and puffing just trying to see the season through – my players have worked hard.

“Tough games, all games are tough for different reasons. It’s rebuilding for us, we’ve had awful injuries and been a bit thin on the ground but there’s been no lack off effort from us, just a lack of clinical finishing. No doubt they’re a good outfit Leeds.”

The result keeps Leeds in the hunt for a top ten finish, while Burnley sit in 15th on 39 points.
