Mason ‘shocked’ by offside call in Tottenham defeat

Ryan Mason says he’s ‘shocked’ by Harry Kane’s disallowed goal in the 3-1 away defeat to Leeds United.

Spurs’ top-four hopes suffered a major blow at Elland Road as they failed to capitalise on Leicester’s loss to Newcastle.

Stuart Dallas opened the scoring for Leeds in the 13th minute. He reacted first to a good save from Hugo Lloris, smashing the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

OPINION: Method in Arteta’s madness is scant consolation for Arsenal

Heung-Min Son equalised after a great Dele Alli assist soon after, and Spurs then thought they had taken the lead.

A silky move split the Leeds defence open and Alli played in Kane. He looked onside and calmly chipped the ball over Illan Meslier into the net, only for VAR to rule it out for a marginal offside.

Goals from Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo ultimately gave Marcelo Bielsa’s men an impressive victory.

Reacting to his first league defeat as interim boss, Mason said: “We had moments but we weren’t clinical enough at times.

“They started bright but we got back. At 1-1 there was an offside decision and I’m shocked. I don’t think it was right. People don’t understand momentum in football and how those decisions can affect you.

“I’ve seen it back. My first look, second look and 10th look tell me that it’s not offside. At 1-1 it’s a big moment. In my opinion they got that one wrong.

“Leeds know what they’re doing, they play a certain way and it took us a while to get into the game.

“In the second half we were the better team. The moments we had, you have to take them in these games.

“Today was a massive game for us, to lose it hurts. It’s difficult to win in the Premier League but we’ve got to have our full attention on next week now.”

The defeat keeps Spurs in sixth place on 56 points. They’re two points behind fifth-placed West Ham and five behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

A solid season run-in could see them sneak into the top four. They’ll need to beat the likes of Wolves, Aston Villa and Leicester in the next few weeks.
