Ronaldo issues warning to PSG’s Champions League hopes despite signing Messi

PSG enjoyed a summer transfer window to remember, signing decorated winners and leaders while complementing them with the likes of highly-rated younger players – Ramos and Messi compared with Donnarumma and Hakimi. Given that the French giants were already a team to fear, their summer acquisitions have propelled them to one of the favorites for the upcoming UEFA Champions League title.

The reasons are obvious. Ramos led Real Madrid to three consecutive European titles – and four trophies overall – while the addition of Lionel Messi has secured the services of one of the greatest players of all time. Les Parisiens fans are already licking their lips over the prospect of a Messi-Neymar-Mbappe attacking trio.

Furthermore, this does not take into the consideration the acquisition of Wijnaldum, an excellent midfielder who proved his worth at Klopp’s deadly Liverpool side, nor does it factor in the presence of Euro 2020 champions Gianluigi Donnarumma and Marco Verratti.

However, Pochettino’s side have been handed an eye-catching warning by one of the greatest names to have graced the beautiful game: Ronaldo Nazario. The retired Selecao sensation, currently the president Real Valladolid, opened up about PSG’s UEFA Champions League aspirations, admitting that the French giants are one of the favorites.

The former striker, who sat down for an interview with DAZN, did go on to caution the Parc des Princes side, arguing that signing the best players in the world doesn’t necessarily guarantee titles.

“It is still too early to say who will win the Champions League,” Ronaldo said, as per Marca.

“The picture begins to take shape at the quarter-final stage. Paris Saint-Germain are in pole position, but it’s one thing to talk and another to play.

“There are many factors that influence the outcome on the pitch. I played for Real Madrid for almost five seasons, in the team of the Galacticos, and I never won the Champions League.

“Winning is never automatic, even if you have the best players in your team, and that also applies to PSG.”

Ronaldo is considered by many as the greatest player to have never won the Ol’ Big Ears. Despite playing in a star-studded Los Blancos side, the Brazilian never succeeded at the European level, thus adding importance to his words.

The UCL has been an obsession for the Ligue 1 outfits but the mega-rich outfit have come up short season after season. The 2019/20 season saw them finish as runners-up while last term, Neymar and Co. crashed out in the semifinals, losing to Guardiola’s Man City. The upcoming campaign will be crucial as it might be the only season in which Neymar, Messi, and Mbappe will play alongside each other given that Kylian will be out of contract next summer.
