Paul Robinson has suggested that Joe Rodon could be the answer to Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles at centre-back as he continues to shine for his new club.
Rodon grew up in Swansea and he joined them when he was just eight-years-old. He progressed through their academy and he was named on the bench in 2016 and 2017 while they were in the Premier League.
The young defender was afforded his first chance to impress in senior football with Cheltenham Town during the 2017/18 season. He made 12 appearances for the League Two outfit that term.
OPINION: Mourinho could *still* have the last laugh in this stupid season
Under Graham Potter, Rodon broke into Swansea’s first team during the 2018/19 campaign. He played 27 times in the Championship as they finished tenth in the table.
He continued to play regularly under Steve Cooper last season as the Swans finished in the top six. They lost to Brentford in the semi-finals to miss out on a place at Wembley. His form for his boyhood club alerted Premier League clubs and it was Tottenham who signed him.
The signing was made official in October for a fee believed to be around £11m. The Welshman has played ten times for Spurs so far this term.
Rodon has barely put a foot wrong when he has played and his latest outing came this weekend against Aston Villa. The 23-year-old impressed as Tottenham kept a clean sheet en route to beating the Villans 2-0.
Mourinho’s side are now three points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea with nine games to go. Robinson told Football Insider that all of Tottenham’s centre-backs have struggled for “consistency” during the 2020/21 campaign:
“Mourinho has got a lot of faith in Rodon.
“He is not shy to put him into the side in big games and he repaid the faith against Villa. He could be the answer.
“It has been the biggest problem area for Spurs all season, centre-half. Whoever it has been, Dier, Alderweireld, Sanchez or Rodon it has not worked or at least Mourinho has not liked it.
“There has not been a consistent pairing all season. Not one centre-half has shown good enough consistency this season.”
