Liverpool told they would be ‘silly’ not to sign cut-price defender

Liverpool would be “silly” not to buy Ozan Kabak for cheap after his recent performances, according to former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Kabak moved to the Reds on loan until the end of the season from Bundesliga side Schalke with Jurgen Klopp suffering from a number of injury issues in his defence this season.

Liverpool have been without Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez for most of the season, while Joel Matip has also had his injury issues with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho having to fill in at centre-back at times.

However, Klopp seems to have settled on a central defensive partnership of Kabak and Nathaniel Phillips until he gets the rest of his defenders back fit.

Reports at the time claimed Liverpool had an £18m option to buy the Turkey international at the end of the campaign if he impressed, while recent reports have claimed that they could be looking to get them down to around £10m.

Robinson told Football Insider: “You can see that there is a lot of potential there, even though he has not set the world alight, you can see the potential.

“For that kind of money, you would be silly not to consider it. Kabak will not be a regular starter when all of the centre-halves are fit but for that price and that age you would snap their hands off.

“There is time for Jurgen Klopp and his coaches to work with him and mould him into the player that they want.”

Robinson’s comments come five days after Football Insider revealed that Liverpool ‘are looking to exploit Schalke’s financial problems’ by signing Kabak in a cut-price deal.

The report added that the Reds ‘are already working in the background to sign Kabak for considerably less’ than the £18m option in the loan deal they signed in January.

It is understood that Kabak is ‘keen’ on joining Liverpool permanently and that the Premier League club ‘believe they may be able to negotiate the fee down to around £9-10m.’

Meanwhile, Kabak recently opened up on his first couple of months at Anfield, Kabak said: “In England the level is really, really high.

“The Bundesliga is also a really high level, but I think the Premier League is higher in intensity and physical quality.

“I think it is the highest level of football and I am trying to adapt here. Thiago [Alcantara], Bobby [Firmino] and [Xherdan] Shaqiri played in the Bundesliga before they were here and our manager also managed in Germany, so I take their advice and try to give my best in training and the games.

“I have given everything in the last month, but of course it is hard to adapt here because there are good players and good teams in the Premier League.

“It is always harder to join a team in winter, to be honest, to play with new team-mates and obviously to move to a new country with a new language. It has been a challenge for me, but I have tried to adapt as soon as possible.”
