Rio picks two threats to Champions League glory for Man City

Rio Ferdinand has backed Manchester City to go deep in the Champions League this season but claims Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are the biggest threat to their hopes of glory.

Goals from Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus secured a comfortable away win over Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday and given their dominance domestically, many are backing Pep Guardiola to lead his side to the coveted European crown.

But Ferdinand explains why he thinks PSG and Bayern could cause them problems later in the competition.

“I think Bayern have got the experience and the quality,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“But I think Paris Saint-Germain as well.

“In having the two wide players or your two cheating and saying to Man City, ‘are you going to commit?’ Not cheating, asking questions.

“Asking, tactically, will you stay back or will you keep shooting forwards in a shootout?

“If you’re playing against a team with the likes of Mbappe and Neymar in a shootout, you’re dicing with it there.

“It would be good. It would be interesting to see if we can get it.”

Owen Hargreaves can’t see them failing to win the Premier League title, with City holding a 10-point lead over second-placed Manchester United.

“I don’t see it,” said Hargreaves.

“They can only stop themselves with mistakes and injuries.

“I don’t see that happening in the Premier League.”

City boss Pep Guardiola rejected any suggestion that his side are the tournament favourites.

“When I see Bayern Munich I don’t think we are favourites,” he told BT Sport.

“My target is West Ham in three days.

“If people say we are favourites we have to accept it, but a team who in their whole history has been a semi-final once OK, they say it, we have to accept it.”
