Ferdinand claims Man Utd star will be secretly ’embarrassed’

Rio Ferdinand thinks Man Utd captain Harry Maguire will be secretly “embarrassed” by his penalty claims against West Brom despite his determined post-match interview.

Having been usurped at the top of the Premier League by Manchester City on January 26, the second-placed Red Devils have fallen seven points behind their rivals having managed one win in five top-flight games.

Pep Guardiola’s men also boast a match in hand over Man Utd, who were held to a shock 1-1 draw at struggling West Brom on Sunday after failing to build on Bruno Fernandes expertly cancelling out Mbaye Diagne’s early header.

Maguire saw a penalty he won overturned upon review by referee Craig Pawson at the Hawthorns, where West Brom put in an impressive display and could have won it themselves late on.

The England international was livid that the penalty didn’t stand but Ferdinand thinks Maguire will be “embarrassed” by trying to claim such a soft decision as a penalty.

Ferdinand told the FIVE YouTube channel: “If Harry’s being honest, he will have woke up the next morning and been embarrassed with what he did.

“It’s not what you want to see from a defender. I don’t think that’s what he’s prided himself on throughout his career. You try and be cute, I understand that, but you would be embarrassed really. He will watch it back and go, ‘bloody hell, what was I thinking?’”

On the penalty incident, Maguire said after the match: “I was so certain it was a penalty. I don’t understand why he’s been sent to check it.

“I’m goalside of the defender, I feel a touch on my shoulder, he’s pulling me back, and then I feel a clip on my heels as well. It was minimal, but it’s a penalty, especially after the referee points to the spot you think there’s no chance it’s getting overturned.

“I was so confident it was going to be given, but it seems like the decisions at the moment are going against us. We can’t be relying on VAR though, we huffed and puffed and have to improve.”
