Ferdinand claims Man Utd ‘can’t afford’ to miss out on key target

Rio Ferdinand has urged Man Utd to “give everything” in an attempt to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland this summer.

The Norway international has bagged 76 goals in his last 75 appearances in all competitions for Dortmund and former club RB Salzburg, with that record turning the heads of clubs around Europe.

The likes of Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have all been linked at one point with Haaland’s devastating finishing catching the eye.

A report in the Manchester Evening News yesterday claimed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and new Man Utd football director John Murtough had ‘settled on Erling Haaland as their centre forward priority in the transfer market’.

And Ferdinand thinks the Red Devils could regret missing out on signing the 20-year-old this summer.

Ferdinand said on his FIVE YouTube channel: “You know what, they’ve just got to go and give everything to get Haaland, I don’t care.

“I don’t like to talk about players coming from other teams but this guy man, we can’t afford to let this guy go anywhere else.

“His only destination is England, that’s the only place he’s going. If he goes anywhere else I’d be so surprised.

“Born here, born and bred. He obviously loves English football, his dad played here. I’m sure it’s one of his dreams to come and play in England.

“Why not in the red shirt at Old Trafford? Be the guy that brings trophies back to Man United and brings the successful period back. Be that guy.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry hailed Haaland’s “lethal” finishing and “cockiness” on Sky Sports yesterday evening.

“He doesn’t care about anything other than the goal,” Henry said.

“Other players will go on the wing – he wants to stay within the frame of the net. Between the two posts, he knows he is lethal.

“He’s so powerful, by the way. He just wants to run in behind and the way he finishes is ridiculous. The ability that he has: he believes so much in himself, and I like that.

“There’s a bit of cockiness about him, if I can use that word. You’ve got to look at people and say, ‘I’m going to score.’

“He doesn’t want to go anywhere else other than to score goals – that’s his mind. It’s middle, middle or wide, wide, middle.”
