Ferdinand hails ‘broken man’ for climbing out of Man Utd ‘scrap heap’

Rio Ferdinand has hailed Man Utd left-back Luke Shaw for his remarkable turnaround from “broken man” to “one of the most important players” at the club.

Shaw scored the second goal of the game as Man Utd beat arch-rivals Man City in the derby on Sunday with the 2-0 victory taking them 11 points behind leaders City.

The England international has experienced a topsy-turvy time at Old Trafford since signing from Southampton in 2014 and becoming the world’s most expensive teenager at the time.

He had a particularly challenging time under former boss Jose Mourinho, who publicly criticised Shaw on a few occasions, and Ferdinand is pleased to see him bounce back.

Ferdinand said on his FIVE YouTube channel: “We have to look at where he has come from by the way. This was a kid who was broken down mentally, it seemed, it looked like he was on the scrap heap at United. Jose Mourinho when he was there, absolutely discarded him. The kid was a broken man.

“He has come back from the depths to now being one of the most important players at Man United in the way that they’re playing. You have to commend him for that.”

On Sunday, Gary Neville hailed Shaw as the “best left-back in the country” after United won the Manchester derby.

Neville told Sky Sports: “He has been outstanding this season for United. A Luke Shaw that is fit, a Luke Shaw that is physically good and a Luke Shaw that is confident is the best left-back in the country in my opinion.

“He is physically right, he is mentally right and he is clear of injury, so everything is right for Luke Shaw. Because he is an amazing talent, he is a brilliant talent.”
