Report reveals ‘penalty fee’ if Man Utd don’t keep Cavani

Man Utd will have to pay Edinson Cavani a sizeable amount if they decide against keeping him for another season, according to reports.

The Uruguayan has only started 12 matches this season for the Red Devils but when he has played his impact has usually been significant, with the 34-year-old contributing seven goals and two assists.

It seems a matter of when rather than if the Red Devils trigger that extension clause in the contract he signed after moving from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in the summer.

However, ESPN claims that United are ‘keen to wait until Edinson Cavani has recovered from injury before making a decision about his future’.

Unsurprisingly, Man Utd are described as ‘happy’ with Cavani this season while the striker is ‘happy at Old Trafford and is open to staying for a second season’.

The report has revealed that the Premier League side ‘would need to pay the striker close to €2m if the club decide against keeping him for a second season’.

ESPN‘s sources have said that a ‘penalty fee’ would apply to Man Utd should they decide to ‘pull the plug’ on a second year but that Cavani also has ‘the option to terminate the deal’.

Earlier this season, Cavani was handed a three-match ban by the Football Association at the end of December for using a racial term in a social media post.

Cavani posted a social media message on Instagram shortly after their match against Southampton in November, replying to a message of congratulations using the Spanish term ‘negrito’, which translates as ‘black’.

The Uruguayan swiftly deleted the post and issued an apology after being made aware of the connotations, with the player releasing an apologetic statement the following day saying he was “completely opposed to racism”.

But the FA charged the striker with “misconduct for a breach of FA Rule E3” in relation to his social media post on December 17 and then subsequently banned him for three matches.

And ESPN adds that Cavani is still ‘deeply upset about the charge’.
