Jose Mourinho’s sacking at Spurs “had something to do with the new Super League”, according to former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie.
The 58-year-old paid the price for a disappointing campaign on Monday, with Tottenham currently seventh in the Premier League and with little chance of making the top four.
That may not prove to be too much of an issue given Tottenham’s involvement in the controversial European Super League – but Mourinho will not be the man to lead them in the new breakaway competition should it materialise.

Mourinho has also been denied the chance of delivering a first piece of silverware to the club in 13 years, with Spurs set to take on Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday.
The former Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss was appointed in November 2019, less than 12 hours after Mauricio Pochettino had been dismissed.
Spurs, who have appointed Ryan Mason as interim boss until the end of the season, have been accused of strange timing around Mourinho’s sacking.
And McAvennie reckons the theory that his sacking was based entirely on recent results is “nonsense”.
“I’ve been told that Mourinho’s sacking had something to do with the new Super League,” McAvennie told Football Insider.
“Obviously we can’t confirm that but Tottenham saying that it was a purely results-based decision is nonsense.
“The week going into a cup final? No chance. No chance you sack anyone. Jose will have told [Daniel] Levy that this is all a load of nonsense and Levy wouldn’t have that.
“He wants money, if it’s going to happen he wants it to happen. Mourinho knows the fans are the lifeblood of the game.
“I’m telling you, if there’s one person who can find a way to beat Man City in a cup final, it’s Mourinho. I don’t understand the logic, something else must’ve happened.”
Tottenham play Southampton on Wednesday with Mourinho’s Spurs previously thumping the Saints 5-2 in the second Premier League match of the season.
And their manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is expecting a particularly difficult game, he said: “The challenge we have is to go to Tottenham and be a team that is able to take something there.
“It’s not easy, we have lost against them very high in the first game. We want to show that we are now better.”
