One of the “Big Three” finally slips up: Porto have now fallen two points behind fellow title contenders Benfica and Sporting CP after stumbling in a one-all draw with Maritimo. As such, they will hope to get back on track when they host Arouca, who are part of a crop of struggling sides at this early stage of the current campaign.
And then there were two: Porto aren’t the only side to see their winning streak end. Gil Vicente, who had initially raced to the top of charts, saw their luck run out as they lost 2-0 to Benfica last weekend, meaning that the Eagles, along with Sporting CP are the only team still to maintain a perfect record after three rounds.
Already in trouble? Both Belenenses and Famalicão find themselves as relegation contenders already after failing to win a single game so far. In fact, the two bottom ranked teams have yet to even draw a match, and with zero points from their first three, fans certainly will be concerned. Yes, it’s still early on in the season but Famalicão will have to host Sporting CP next in a match that could turn out to be a really rough day at the office if they don’t get their act together.
Top Primeira Liga matches: August 27 to August 29, 2021
Porto vs Arouca: After drawing their last match, which now has caused them to fall two points behind fellow “Big Three” sides Sporting CP and Benfica, Porto will naturally look to rebound as they take on an Arouca side who’ve won just one game so far.
Famalicão vs Sporting CP: This will be a great opportunity for Sporting CP to get some points on the board as they’ll be traveling to face a host who have yet to win a single one of their first trio of matches; in fact, alongside Belenenses, Famalicão have earned zero points to date.
Benfica vs Tondela: Given that Tondela have lost their last two games, will Benfica be able to use this to their advantage to head into the international break having won four games out of four? Especially with Sporting CP and Porto both facing strugglers, the Eagles certainly won’t want to slip up here.
