Paris Saint Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly told the club he wishes to leave this summer after just six months in charge as Spurs and Real Madrid consider moves.
Pochettino has been heavily linked this week with a return to Spurs where he was in charge for five successful yet ultimately trophyless years, while Real Madrid are apparently also keen on bringing the Argentine to Spain after Zinedine Zidane resigned again.
Now goal.com claim that Pochettino has made it clear he would like to be released from the final year of his contract in Paris, with further reports this week suggesting he has found it tougher than expected to handle the politics and pressure of the French superclub.
Real Madrid certainly wouldn’t offer an escape from that side of the game but would represent one of the truly elite jobs in world football and one that would surely be hard to turn down should Madrid firm up their initial interest.
Bizarre as it seems, Spurs might be the more obvious move. Pochettino has made no secret of his “unfinished business” in North London after taking Spurs to three consecutive top-three finishes and a Champions League final but failing to land any silverware with a club that has now gone 13 years without a trophy.
“Before I die I want to manage Tottenham and try to win one title!” he said last April. “It will be an opportunity to pay back fans for all the love they showed us.
“From the day that I left the club, my dream is to one day be back and finish the work we didn’t finish. Deep inside I would like one day to be back, this club is special.”
Pochettino still has family living in London and is apparently open to returning to a club he loves where he would also get the security of a long-term contract.
Pochettino was sacked by Spurs just months after the Champions League final with their domestic form having collapsed and the club languishing in 14th in the Premier League. Jose Mourinho came in and took the club to sixth before the Covid-disrupted season came to a close but was unable to end the trophy drought and was sacked six days before the Carabao Cup final with results and style of play failing to satisfy fans.
Ryan Mason was placed in temporary charge for the Carabao Cup final, which was lost 1-0 to Manchester City, and the last six league games of the season; Spurs took 12 points from those games to secure a seventh-placed finish and with it Europa Conference football but have endured a fraught end to the season with the European Super League fiasco and star striker Harry Kane’s desire to leave this summer.
