Perez makes bizarre conspiracy claim over Chelsea protests

Amid claims the European Super League will return in some form, Florentino Perez claimed the Chelsea fan protests on Monday night were not what they seemed.

A group of Chelsea fans blocked the path of the team bus at Stamford Bridge to voice their displeasure at the ESL plans clear before Petr Cech intervened.

The announcement was made that the Blues would be backing out of the controversial project while the fans were outside the stadium, but Perez appears to doubt the legitimacy of those protests.

OPINION: Exposed Kroenke is now vulnerable to Arsenal fans

In an interview with El Larguero’s Manu Carreno, he insisted clubs couldn’t simply walk away from the ESL having signed binding contracts, after a bizarre, mysterious claim over the Chelsea remonstrations.

“Who brought those Chelsea fans to protest? There were only 40 Chelsea fans,” he claimed, “and I could tell who brought them… just like here someone gave Cadiz jerseys (against Super League).”

What?! Who ‘brought them’? What are you on about? And there were a hell of a lot more than 40, Florentino.

The Real Madrid president held the wavering Premier League clubs responsible for the U-turn following Sunday’s announcement.

“There was one part of the English group that didn’t have much interest, I won’t say who. I think this became contagious with the others.

“These directors are mostly American, maybe from the NFL or NBA. They’re leaving because of the atmosphere.

“FIFA created a big spectacle. It was as if we had let off an atomic bomb. Maybe we didn’t explain it well, but they also didn’t give us an opportunity to explain it.

“Some people just didn’t want that. I’ve never seen such aggression from the president of UEFA and some of the countries’ footballing authorities.

“I’ve been in football for 20 years and I’ve never seen threats like this. It was like we killed someone. It was like we killed football. But, we were trying to work out how to save football.

“Nobody has yet paid the penalisation fee for leaving the SuperLeague. We are almost all still in this, they have not officially left yet.

“If this project didn’t work, another one will. Remember: all the 12 clubs have signed a binding contract”.
