Ex-Sheff Utd man claims ‘scapegoat’ Lundstram is worth £10m

Former Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny claims John Lundstram is being used as a “scapegoat” by fans and reckons “he’s probably a £10m player”.

The Blades sit rock bottom of the Premier League table after a disastrous second season in the top flight, with Chris Wilder leaving the club last month.

The United players finished in the top half of the Premier League last season but they now look a shadow of that side, lacking confidence and the quality to compete.

THE TREBLE: Tuchel v Guardiola, Arsenal wobble, faltering Leicester

Lundstram – who was hailed as a Fantasy Premier League God last season – has perhaps suffered the biggest drop off in form and, with his contract up in the summer, some Blades supporters have criticised him for a lack of effort.

However, former Sheff Utd goalkeeper Kenny thinks a lot of the criticism has been harsh with most players playing below their ability.

Kenny told Football Insider: “It’s a difficult one. He’s getting a lot of criticism at the moment with the way he’s playing.

“But you could look at every player and say that. None of them are playing to the standard we want them to.

“Because he’s gonna be out of contract he’s maybe being used as a scapegoat. He’s turned down a deal and looking like he’s going to move on. Because of that, people are jumping on him even more.

“He’s probably a £10m player and would be a fantastic Championship player at that level.”

Lundstram has been linked with free transfers to the likes of Burnley and Rangers but said “everything is still on the table” ahead of United’s recent clash with Chelsea.

The midfielder told BT Sport:  “It’s the same situation, everything is still on the table.

“We’ll see what happens. Of course, (speculation) is bound to happen but I’m here and while I am here I’m committed, as you’ve seen in my performances – 110 per cent. No-one can question that.

“Who knows what will happen but while I’m here, I’ll give everything.

“January was all about the games for me, getting my head down in training, and it was quite a good month for us, we picked up some good results.

“It’s been a frustrating season for us, because we have lost narrow games where last year we had won them.

“Performance levels haven’t been too far off, there’s only been a couple of games where we have not been ourselves, and we have revived a little bit lately.

“It’s been frustrating for me, personally, because I have not got in the goals. But the commitment has been there.

“I have been quite hard on myself, but I am trying to get in those positions still, which is a good sign. I had a few chances lately and I have got to keep doing that and keep believing.”
