Owen: Liverpool still the ‘second best’ team in the PL

Michael Owen has suggested that despite their poor form, Liverpool are still the “second best” team in the Premier League.

After winning the Premier League title last season, the 2020/21 campaign has been a wretched one for Liverpool.

They have been hampered by several high profile injuries, but results have been poor as they have fallen away from league title contention.

The Reds’ form at Anfield has been particularly disappointing. A run of six consecutive home defeats leaves them eighth in the top flight ahead of Monday night’s game against Wolves.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are eight points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea with ten games of the season remaining.

The Premier League champions were handed a boost in midweek as they advanced in the Champions League. They beat RB Leipzig 4-0 on aggregate to progress to the quarter-final stage.

Owen told Premier League Productions, as cited by The Daily Star, that based on their quality, Liverpool are the second best team in the league:

“The table obviously says that [United are second best] so you’ve obviously got to lean with that.

“I still watch them and try to fathom out ‘what is a Manchester United style?’.

“What does Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tell them before the game? Because to me the team actually sits there and it looks like they’ve got counter-attacking off to a tee, I think they’re a fantastic counter-attacking team.

“Still have questions against them when they’re playing against teams who like to defend. Are they the second best in the league?

“Man City are far and away, Liverpool are the second best really, not in recent weeks, but they are.

“I still think they’re the second best team in the league. They’re recent European champions.”

Ian Wright disagreed as he suggested that on current form, Liverpool do not warrant this tag:

“Not the way they’re playing now, Mick, not the way they’re playing now.”

Owen finished the exchange by insisting that the Reds are still a “very good” team:

He added: “They’re reigning Premier League champions. So they’re still a very good team, just in a bad patch.

“Chelsea are looking good as well. You could still argue that they’re the second best.”
