Alex Ferguson took charge of his first match in charge of Manchester United. Sadly for Ferguson, it wasn’t a fairytale start as his new charges went down 2-0 at the Manor Ground.
Ferguson had left Scottish side Aberdeen to replace Ron Atkinson at Old Trafford and things started slowly. In fact, United only won one of his first six games in charge (a 1-0 win over QPR in Ferguson’s first match at Old Trafford).
Slowly though, results started to come and United won ten of their remaining 22 league games. Two of those were home and away wins over Liverpool winners of the Double the previous season.
It would be four years until United would win their first trophy under Ferguson. The FA Cup was won in the 1989/90 season and that was the first of a remarkable 38 trophies that United won win under Ferguson before he finally retired from the game at the end of the 1012/13 season.
