England played their first match under floodlights on this day back in 1953. They played in the Yankee Stadium, home of the New York Yankees baseball team against the United States and won the game 6-3.
The Yankee Stadium had a capacity of 67,000 at the time and must have been eerily quiet as only 7,271 fans watched the game!
Tom Finney and Nat Lofthouse both scored twice, with Ivor Broadis and Redfern Froggatt scoring England’s other goals.
England’s record against the USA is very good, having won 8 of the 11 games between the two. The only two defeats were the famous 1-0 defeat in the 1950 World Cup and a 2-0 defeat towards the end of Graham Taylor’s tie as England manager.
After this game in 1953, the next two games between the two sides were decidedly one-sided. England beat the US 8-1 in 1959 and then 10-0 five years later in 1964!
