It was on this day in 1990 that Alex Ferguson made one of the shrewdest signings in his managerial career, by signing Denis Irwin for a mere £625,000 from Oldham Athletic.
The Irish left back had started his career with Leeds United before moving to Oldham in 1986. During his time at Boundary Park, Irwin helped the Latics to reach the League Cup Final and FA Cup Semi Final, where they lost to his new club Manchester United.
Irwin would be a great servant to Manchester United, spending the next twelve years at the club and winning every trophy possible. In all, he made 529 appearances and scored 33 goals.
At the end of the 2001/02 season, Irwin left the club on a free transfer to join First Division Wolverhampton Wanderers. The club were promoted to the Premier League in his first season at Molineux and he stayed on to play in all but six of Wolves’ first league games in the top flight in nineteen years.
