On this day in 2000, the five England players not to receive an honour were finally given an MBE for their work in football.
Almost 34 years had passed since England’s famous World Cup win but Alan Ball, George Cohen, Roger Hunt, Nobby Stiles and Ray Wilson finally got their hands on a gong. Many football fan thought that this wait was loong overdue and that the eleven players should have been awarded the honour together.
Alan Ball, Nobby Stiles and Ray Wilson have since passed away. George Cohen is now 81 and Hunt will be 83 in July. Martin Peters, Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst are also still with us.
England haven’t reached a World Cup Final since that July afternoon at Wembley, although they have reached two Semi Finals. The tournament hasn’t been held in England since, so maybe if we hosted it again…….never mind, it’s nice to dream!
