It was on this day back in 1956 that a young 18 year old called Bobby Charlton made his debut for Manchester United. The match was five days before Bobby Charlton’s 19th birthday and must have been a nice early birthday present for him!
With 41,139 fans cheering him on at Old Trafford, Charlton bagged two goals in a 4-1 victory. Ironically, the opponents were his namesake Charlton Athletic!
Fast forward four months to the return league match at The Valley and Bobby Charlton followed his brace at Old Trafford with his first hat-trick for United.
Bobby Charlton would go on and make a total of 758 appearances for Manchester United and scored an impressive 249 goals before retiring in 1973.
His record number of appearances was surpassed by Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney took Charlton’s goalscoring record by scoring 253 goals between 2004 and 2017.
In his time at Old Trafford, Charlton was involved in the Munich Air Disaster which claimed the lives of eight of his team mates. Ten years later he would go on and win the European Cup with the club after United won the League championship in 1967. He also won the World Cup with England in 1966.
