It was on this day back in 1962 that Accrington Stanley handed in their resignation from the Football League. Financial troubles had blighted the club for a number of years and finally the Lancashire club had to fold.
The club had debts of nearly £60,000 (or just over £1 million in today’s money) and were given little option but to resign from the league. They had already played 33 league matches in the season and these games were all declared void.
The club went on for another four years in the Lancashire Combination League before going out of business in 1966. The club were reformed with the same name in 1968 and moved to their current home, The Crown Ground in 1970.
‘Stanley’ were in the lower echelons of the non-league pyramid when a milk advert used their name as a tag-line in the late 1980s. The advert brought back memories of the club to football fans across the country, but sadly the club did little on the pitch to merit nationwide attention.
In 2006, the club won promotion back to the Football League, a full 44 years after they had to leave it. Twelve years later, they were promoted to the third tier of English football after winning the League Two championship, five points ahead of runner-up Luton Town.
