Fourth Division Aldershot were subjected to an 8-0 hammering at home to First Division Sheffield Wednesday on this day in 1989.
The defeat came in the second leg of their Second Round tie in the League Cup Second Round Second Leg.
After earning a credible 0-0 draw away to the First Division side on 20th September, The Shots supporters could be forgiven for thinking that a cup shock was on the cards. In the First Round, the Hampshire side had come back from a two-goal deficit in the first leg away to Peterborough United to win 6-2 at home in the second leg and progress 6-4 on aggregate.
It was soon proved that this wouldn’t be the case as Wednesday stormed to a 4-0 lead at the break. Four further goals in the second half sealed an impressive win for the visitors. Steve Whitton scoring four goals on the night, Dalian Atkinson bagged a hat-trick and Craig Shakespeare completed the rout.
