It was on this day in 1905 that Boca Juniors of Argentina were formed by a group of Italian immigrants.
Boca play their home games at La Bombonera, which translates as ‘The Chocolate Box’. It is called this because of it’s shape. Three of the stands are joined together and the fourth stand houses the executive boxes and additional seating.
Boca Juniors share a fierce rivalry with River Plate who are also from Buenos Aires. Games between the two are hotly-contested and the derby is known as the Superclasico.
Boca have the better record in Superclasico, but not by much. They have won 89 matches compared to River Plate’s 83 with 78 draws.
Boca have had many fantastic players over the years, the most notable is Diego Maradona. Other players to have worn the blue and yellow include Juan Roman Riquelme, Carlos Tevez, Claudio Caniggia, Gabriel Batistuta and Antonio Rattin.
