Yesterday’s ‘On This Day’ article involved an eleven goal thriller between Grimsby Town and Burnley. Today’s article goes one better with Reading and Arsenal sharing twelve goals back on this day in 2012.
Arsenal won the game but this never looked like happening when home side Reading were 4-0 up after only 37 minutes.
Jason Roberts opened the scoring after 12 minutes before Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny put through his own net six minutes later. This was shortly followed by a third from Mikele Leigertwood and then Noel Hunt got his name on the scoresheet on 37 minutes for the Championship side.
Theo Walcott gave Arsenal a glimmer of hope in first half injury time before Arsenal staged an incredible fight back in the second half.
It took until the 64th minute for Olivier Giroud to score Arsenal’s second of the game before Laurent Koscielny scored at the right end on 89 minutes. Arsenal piled forwards for an equaliser and did so when Theo Walcott netted in the 96th minute.
Marouane Chamakh gave Arsenal the lead for the first time in the game in the 103rd minute before Reading fought back to equalise just before half time in the first period of Extra Time.
The game looked to be going to penalties until Theo Walcott completed is hat-trick and Chamakh grabbed his second in stoppage time at the end of the game.
