The opening day of the season is one of the best days of the year. It’s the first time back after the summer break, you can see the friends you only see at football again and it’s nice to see your team play again.
It can be a great chance to see new players making their debut and your club might even have a new kit to see for the first time.
On this day back in 1925, Burnley fans were in for a bit of a shock though. Their side travelled to Villa Park to play Aston Villa and were thrashed 10-0!
Villa’s Len Capewell scored five of the goals, Billy Walker grabbed a hat trick and George Stephenson and Richard York added a goal apiece.
Burnley conceded 108 goals over the course of the 42 league matches in the 1925/26 season. Quite incredibly, they didn’t get relegated!
