The first FA Cup tie to be played under floodlights took place on this day in 1955.
Carlisle United and Darlington had played out two goalless draws in the FA Cup First Round and a neutral venue was required for the Second Replay. Newcastle United obliged and allowed the replay to be played at their St James’s Park home.
Darlington performed better under the lights and came away with a 3-1 win before losing 1-0 in the next round at home to Accrington Stanley.
